ORIGINAL ARTICLE: In this teaser for tomorrow's Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer we see, for the first time...
Okay. before I get into this, I feel like I need to talk about this teaser-for-the-trailer trend. First off, I am a huge fan of trailers. Really great trailers require a clever economy of ideas that pushes the limits of visual language. I love them in the same way that I love a great short film (#shortfilmshowcase). However, they are still technically just commercials. In essence, these teasers are just commercials for a commercial. That's idiotic, and it's a fad that needs to die a quick and painful death. To the studios: just show us the whole damn trailer. Stop trying to manufacture higher viewing numbers. Getting the most initial views is stupid and meaningless, and you're just insulting the intelligence of your customers. Now that I've got that out of my system, on with the regularly scheduled program.
This new tease reveals a small detail about Spidey's suit in the upcoming film that hasn't yet been featured in any of the webslinger's silver screen adventures. Check it out before we totally spoil it.
Did you see that? Scroll down for the spoiler if you didn't...
Web wings! I'm kind of surprised these took so long to show up in a Spider-Man film since they were part of Steve Ditko's original design back in Amazing Fantasy #15. Most artists after Ditko did away with the wings with a few notable exceptions (Todd McFarlane for one), but I've always been partial to them. I think they offer an interesting aesthetic pop to an already great design. That's in ink and paper, though. Film is a completely different animal. I'm not totally on board with this first glimpse. They are a little large for my tastes. However, the tease seems to hint at there being a reason for their existence outside of just visual flair, so maybe that will explain why they're so large. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into that moment. Either way, keep an eye out tomorrow for a more detailed look at the film and the suit in the real trailer.
Damn you Sony/Marvel for actually putting something worth talking about in this trailer tease.
