You Should Watch This Hilarious New Deadpool 2 Teaser Right Now

Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool.  Okay, everyone already knew that, but I actually think the connection goes a little deeper.  Everything about Reynolds' style of comedy and general personality fits the anarchic comic book character like a skin-tight spandex super suit.   The first movie wasn't exactly flawless, but as a showcase for the near-perfect marriage of character, actor, and a long overdue fourth-wall breaking superhero deconstruction, it rightly became a lightning-in-a-bottle cultural phenomenon.  The world was ready for a sarcastic anti-hero to come along and take down the superhero establishment, and Reynolds and company were gleefully able to oblige.  With all that said, the right-place right-time nature of Deadpool's success made the possibility of a sequel capturing that same spark feel dicey at best, especially when the original's director, Tim Miller, unceremoniously exited the project.

To me, this teaser represents a direct message from Reynolds and his new director, John Wick's David Leitch, to fans.  Basically, they broke out the bullhorn and screamed, "Look, you guys!  It's all fine!  We got this!"  In that way, this is the perfect tease.  It reiterates the style and tone of the first film, and is just filthy with confidence (emphasis on filthy).  The scene is playful and dark in all the right ways, and reminds us of what is so appealing about the Merc-with-the-mouth in the first place.  It also features one of the greatest music licensing coups I've heard in recent memory (Seriously, how did they convince WB to loan out Williams' iconic Superman theme for the Marvel competition?).  The main joke wouldn't work half as well without those familiar heroic horns playing in the background, and whatever they paid for its use was totally worth it.  This scene likely won't show up anywhere in the final film, but that doesn't really matter.  If the actual film has this much style and spot-on humor, then we might even get the elusive comedy sequel that is better than the original.

For now, let the Deadpool-y Reynolds-ness wash over you.
