James Mangold Tweets New Wolverine Pic
Over the past few weeks, director James Mangold and 20th Century Fox have been teasing their upcoming Wolverine movie, Logan, with some interestingly moody images. First, came the poster you see above, which is fairly simple, but evocative. Then, they released a picture of Patrick Stewart looking downright zombified as an extremely aged Professor X.
Next came a disturbingly bald and pale Stephen Merchant, a man who I didn't realize could get any more disturbingly pale, playing albino mutant Caliban.
And just today, Mangold tweeted out a new shot of the man himself.
So, yeah, that basically just looks like a bearded Hugh Jackman. You can see a couple of scars here and there (possibly a hint about the state of his healing powers), but not a lot of this look screams Wolverine. Which I'm guessing is kind of the point. Mangold and Jackman have been very vocal about setting this film apart from most of Jackman's previous outings as the blade-bearing brawler. Which follows with the rumor that this will be the first Wolverine movie with an "R" rating (a rumor supported by a sly f-word that can be found on the script page also tweeted out by Mangold).
So far, I'm intrigued. These pics certainly have a consistent tone. Hopefully, the movie won't be all dire black-and-white photography and moody voice-over (à la Sin City). Mangold's last outing with the character with The Wolverine was better than I expected, although not perfect, but I think at this point he has earned at least a little benefit of the doubt.
We'll see come March 3, 2017.
