Logan - Trailer #1

Logan - Trailer #1

The image of Hugh Jackman that James Mangold tweeted yesterday was apparently just the lead up to the main event today: the first official trailer for Logan.

The tone is definitely in line with the previously released marketing shots.  Somber, serious, and moody.  I see shades of The Wrestler or Crazy Heart, where the past-his-prime hero tries to make up for wasted opportunities.  The Johnny Cash cover of "Hurt" feels like the right choice, if a little on the nose.

Honestly, there really is a lot to love about this.  If it weren't for the odd mechanical hand, masked man, or wire-fu here and there, this could probably pass for a character drama, rather than a comic-book movie.  The Wolverine/Professor X  relationship is one of the best things to come out of the Singer X-Men movies, and the fact that they are taking advantage of that easy chemistry between Jackman and Stewart is fantastic.  Really, any chance to see Stewart on the big screen is a plus.  The big surprise, for me, was the emotional punch of a few of the moments here, even without the full context.  Stewart's face at the 1:12 mark is particularly affecting.

Overall, I'm more stoked than I was yesterday, so I'd say the trailer did its job.  If this is really the last time Jackman dons the claws, like everyone is insisting, then I hope he goes out with a bang.

Check it out and let us know what you think.
